Speaker Biographies
Moderator: Rick Row, Director of Sustainable Silicon Valley
Rick Row joined Sustainable Silicon Valley, a non-profit organization, as the Executive Director in June of 2007. Sustainable Silicon Valley partners with businesses, governments, and other non-profit organizations in Silicon Valley to create a more sustainable future by identifying and addressing environmental and resource pressures in the region. As its first initiative the partnership is working towards a regional carbon dioxide reduction goal.
For the previous five years, he managed Global Care, an environmental, health and safety (EHS) initiative, in the EHS Division at SEMI, a global industry association for companies providing equipment, materials and services used to manufacture semiconductors and related technologies. Previously Rick worked on environmental engineering R&D projects for the electric utility industry at the Electric Power Research Institute in Palo Alto. He has also consulted on innovation management, as well as held financial management and analysis positions, in the mining industry.
Rick holds a BE in chemical engineering from the University of Queensland, Australia, and an MBA in international business from Golden Gate University, San Francisco.
Opening Remarks: Mark Monday, Vice President, Marketing, Access Routing Technology Group, Cisco
Mark Monday is the Vice President of Marketing/Product Management for Cisco's Access Routing Technology Group where he leads a team responsible for creating new service solutions for Commercial, Enterprise and Service Providers. Much of Marks focus is around integrating Unified Communications (including IPT, voice messaging, video and VoIP), on the Integrated Service Routers. He specifically identifies product requirements, develops and communicates strategy and technical information. Mark has been with Cisco for 11 years and has won the Pioneer Award twice for innovation. Prior to joining Cisco, Mark spent 10 years in the Remote Access market with a variety of companies. Mark has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee and a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Management from the Ohio State University.
Opening Remarks: James F. Geiger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Cbeyond
As Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, James F. Geiger's vision and leadership have positioned Cbeyond to become an industry leading managed services provider that delivers integrated packages of voice, mobile and broadband to small businesses.
Prior to founding Cbeyond, Mr. Geiger was Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Intermedia Communications, an integrated communications provider. He joined Intermedia after it acquired FiberNet, a metropolitan area network provider that he co-founded in 1993. While at Intermedia, he was also in charge of Digex, the company's complex web-hosting business division, until just prior to its carve-out IPO.
Before its acquisition, Mr. Geiger was President and Chief Executive Officer of Fibernet. In 1989, Mr. Geiger was a Co-founder of a predecessor Fibernet which was purchased by MFS, of Omaha, Nebraska in 1992.
In the 1980's Mr. Geiger held various sales and marketing management positions at Frontier Communications, Inc. He began his career at Price Waterhouse and received his bachelor's degree in public accounting and pre-law from Clarkson University.
Mr. Geiger served as Chairman of the Association for Local Telecommunications Services (ALTS), the facilities based carrier's national trade association from 2003-2005 and until recently served on the Board of Directors of Comptel after ALTS merger with Comptel. He is a member of the Marist School Board of Trustees in Atlanta and also serves on the Board of Directors of the Hands on Network, a national organization, based in Atlanta, which mobilizes volunteers and promotes civic engagement in communities across the United States.
In 2006, Mr. Geiger received AeA's Technology Entrepreneur of the year award, and Ernst & Young named him as a finalist for the Technology Entrepreneur of the Year in the SE region. Ernst & Young choose Mr. Geiger as the SE Regional Technology Entrepreneur of the Year in 2007 making him a finalist in the national competition taking place in November 2007.
Panelist: Jason Matlof, Partner, Battery Ventures
Jason joined Battery in January 2005 and focuses on investments in clean energy, networking and security technologies. Jason is currently a board member at Agito Networks, SmartSpark Energy Systems and SunEthanol, and a board observer at Advent Solar. Before joining Battery, Jason spent more than a decade in management roles at leading technology companies. Most recently, he served as Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Neoteris, which was acquired by NetScreen and then subsequently acquired by Juniper Networks. At Neoteris, Jason was responsible for developing and executing the company’s product strategy and establishing leadership within the emerging SSL VPN product category.
Prior to Neoteris, Jason spent five years at Cisco Systems, where he led the product management team for the company’s multi-billion dollar family of fixed-configuration Catalyst switches. Jason has also held positions with Ford Motor Company, Ericsson Raynet Corporation and MPR Associates. Jason received a BA cum laude in Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Panelist: Doreen Reid, The Climate Group
Doreen Reid graduated from the University of Glasgow, Scotland in 1989 with an MA joint honors degree in French & German. She then joined the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Valley Tourist Board and for ten years undertook a number of different roles aimed at business promotion of Greater Glasgow and Clyde Valley.
In February 2000 she moved to San Francisco and in October 2000 she joined the team of Scottish Development International, Scotland’s economic development agency focusing on growing Scotland as a knowledge economy.
In March 2004 Doreen took up the position of Research Associate with the Science & Innovation Team at the British Consulate in San Francisco. The Science & Innovation portfolio focused on climate change policy and clean technology and there Doreen was actively involved in helping to coordinate a number of high profile activities including a forum for local government leaders on ‘Becoming a Zero Carbon City’, the business leaders panel ‘Carbon Down, Profits Up’ at the UN World Environment Day events in San Francisco, events relating to UK Chief Science Advisor Sir David King’s visit to Northern California, and the International Sustainable Energy Forum - a collaborative event between the governments of The UK, Canada and The Netherlands.
In November 2006, Doreen joined The Climate Group as Senior Associate for Operations & Business Outreach. This role includes managing relationships and sharing information with The Climate Group’s key business and government contacts, engaging and mobilizing business to support progressive climate change policy, outreach to potential new members, planning and organizing events & producing materials and information to Climate Group grantors.
Panelist: Sky Stanfield, Associate, Farella Braun+Martel LLP
Sky Stanfield is an associate in Farella Braun + Martel's Environmental Law Department and a member of the Air Quality, Climate Change and Green Building Groups.
Ms. Stanfield’s environmental practice is concentrated on assisting clients with regulatory compliance matters, including permitting, responding to enforcement actions, and strategies for maintaining compliance for ongoing operations. She has extensive experience with environmental review statutes such as CEQA and NEPA. She has helped clients whose projects are undergoing environmental review and also has experience assisting clients with challenges to inadequate environmental review for other private and public projects. In addition, she has in-depth experience with the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, the laws focused on the protection of endangered species, the management of federal lands, California’s water supply and underground storage tank management.
In the area of products law, Ms. Stanfield has assisted in the defense of Proposition 65 enforcement actions, with counseling on Department of Transportation labeling and packaging requirements and has particular expertise in the Toxics in Packaging Prevention Act.
In the area of Brownfields, Ms. Stanfield's practice includes performance of environmental due diligence work for real property and corporate transactions, with recent work involving the sale of a petroleum distribution company and its associated service station facilities in Hawaii; conducting potentially responsible parties investigations; and emergency removal actions under CERCLA.
Representative matters include assisting with the development of an environmental management system for a life sciences company; evaluating products for compliance with the Toxics in Packaging Prevention Act; and commenting on environmental reviews prepared for updates to County General Plans and for major federal land management actions.
Ms. Stanfield is a member of Farella, Braun + Martel’s “Green Task Force.” In this capacity she led the effort to register the firm with the California Climate Action Registry and has familiarity with California’s greenhouse gas emission reporting protocols.
At Boalt Hall School of Law, Ms. Stanfield was Articles Editor and Executive Editor of the Ecology Law Quarterly, and received the Joe Sax Environmental Fellowship and the American Jurisprudence Award in California Environmental Issues. Ms. Stanfield clerked for the Honorable Lawrence K. Karlton, Senior Judge, of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California.
Panelist: Kevin Slovick, Fun Photo Guys
Following his passion for photography, Kevin Slovick co-founded Fun Photo Guys, a Certified Bay Area Green Business that focuses on professional digital photography for weddings, engagements, social events, portraits and product shots. With his family and community in mind, Kevin has committed to using green technologies and renewable resources in both his business and personal life. Fun Photo Guys mission is to be socially and environmentally responsible in the way they source, market, and deliver professional photography services.
Kevin is a life-long Bay Area resident who is committed to helping businesses become greener. He has written a "Green Paper" entitled "9 Steps to Greening Your Business" which was published on StartupNation.com. Fun Photo Guys is a member of the Bay Area Green Business Program, Co-Op America, Sustainable Business Alliance, Pleasant Hill / San Ramon Chambers of Commerce, and the Tri-Valley Convention and Visitor's Bureau. Kevin is an active member of the Pleasant Hill Chamber of Commerce Green Business Committee, helping local businesses become greener.
In addition to being an entrepreneur, Kevin has been a Network Systems Engineer, designing and implementing IT data center solutions since 1989. He holds many technology certifications, including MCSE, MCDBA, MCTS, CCNP, UC-500, and MCNE. Kevin provides IT consulting services to small and medium sized businesses through NorCal Voice and Data (NCVD.net) based in Concord, California. His work with the Hill Physicians Medical Group has reduced their data center's energy consumption considerably by consolidating 46 Windows servers down to four physical servers using VMware's ESX Server technology, and by replacing older full-size legacy servers with Hewlett Packard's c-Class Blade Server technology.
If all of that doesn't keep him busy enough, Kevin is a father of five, with two teenagers and three children under the age of two. He sees being green as a necessity for the sustainability of the planet for future generations. His children are counting on him to make a difference. Kevin is a strong believer that we do not inherit the earth from our parents. Instead, we are borrowing from our Children.
Panelist: Lisa Rose, Green Business Coordinator for the County of Santa Clara Green Business Program
Lisa Rose is the Green Business Coordinator with the County of Santa Clara's Integrated Waste Management Division. She has been employed with the County for eight years and has been the Green Business Coordinator for the last four years. Since joining the program, the number of businesses certified in the program has grown by more than 89% with over 240 businesses certified in Santa Clara County. In addition to her duties as the Green Business Program Coordinator, Lisa also oversees the County's Graffiti and Litter Abatement Program and staffs the Recycling and Waste Reduction Commission. Prior to her work with the County of Santa Clara, Lisa worked seven years as a Community Coordinator in the City of San Jose's Anti-Graffiti Program.
